Open Source Migration
The rising costs of proprietary technology have had significant impact in the world of corporate computing. CIOs are now giving Open Source Software (OSS) a second glance and most have used these in varying degrees of implementation. Recent years have seen a rising trend in the integration of Linux in the corporate mainstream. While majority have implemented Linux to run non-core systems, such as file, print and Web servers, an increasing number have brought Linux into the Data Center, proof positive that Linux is reaching enterprise levels of acceptance.
However, the adoption of Linux into core operations involves a thorough and in-depth study requiring full executive buy-in. Many factors beyond costs must be considered from the ripple effect of migrating to a new platform of technology - organization and processes, skills of users and IT staff, internal support capability and many others.
The decision to migrate to a Linux environment considers five key decision questions.
-
Making a Strategic Decision: Why do I have to Migrate to Linux?
Analyze the Business Requirements: What do I need to migrate to Linux?
-
Implement the Solutions: How do I implement a Linux environment?
-
Technology Support: How do I maintain the upkeep of my Linux Environment?
